Attic Conversion

Telford Drive, Edinburgh

Project Type: Residential | Attic Conversion | 2024

This project involved the structural redesign of an existing roof to accommodate a new attic conversion in a residential property. The project required the removal of key structural elements, including diagonal timber ties, oxter posts, and a central vertical post, all of which had previously contributed to the stability of the roof.

Key challenges included:

  • Maintaining structural stability during removal of original roof bracing

  • Designing to suit the existing roof geometry and construction tolerances

  • Ensuring new loads were correctly transferred to existing masonry walls

  • Coordinating the layout with architectural requirements and space constraints

The design was completed in accordance with Scottish Building Standards, using British Standard-compliant calculations for both timber and steel elements. By keeping as much of the original building as possible, we created a safe and modern loft space without unnecessary demolition.
