Attic Conversion
Telford Drive, Edinburgh
Project Type: Residential | Attic Conversion | 2024
This project involved the structural redesign of an existing roof to accommodate a new attic conversion in a residential property. The project required the removal of key structural elements, including diagonal timber ties, oxter posts, and a central vertical post, all of which had previously contributed to the stability of the roof.
Key challenges included:
Maintaining structural stability during removal of original roof bracing
Designing to suit the existing roof geometry and construction tolerances
Ensuring new loads were correctly transferred to existing masonry walls
Coordinating the layout with architectural requirements and space constraints
The design was completed in accordance with Scottish Building Standards, using British Standard-compliant calculations for both timber and steel elements. By keeping as much of the original building as possible, we created a safe and modern loft space without unnecessary demolition.
